New year, new wage laws!
Michigan is kicking off the new year with a wage update that all employers, from small businesses to large organizations, need to prepare for. At AlphaDog HR, we’re here to break it down in a way that’s simple, compliant, and stress-free.
What’s Changing on January 1, 2026?
Michigan’s minimum wage will officially increase to $13.73/hour beginning January 1, 2026.
Here’s what you need to know:
This increase is part of the state’s approved schedule to reach $15.00/hour on January 1, 2027
Tipped employees will also see an increase to $5.49/hour beginning January 1, 2026.
For minors under age 18, they will see an increase to $11.67/hour beginning January 1, 2026.
Training wages will also adjust accordingly.
Payroll, scheduling, and hiring plans may need to shift to stay compliant
What Employers Need to Do NOW
1. Review & Adjust Payroll - Identify all employees making below or near $13.73/hour. Update your payroll system to reflect the new rates.
2. Update Job Postings & Offer Letters - Pay transparency matters. Ensure posted wages match the new statewide minimum.
3. Recalculate Wages for Tipped Staff - Restaurants, salons, hospitality, this one’s for you. Review tip credit rules and adjust base wages accordingly.
4. Adjust 2026 Budget Forecasts - Labor costs will rise, especially if you rely on entry-level or hourly roles. Build the new rates into your financial planning.
5. Update Handbooks & Required Posters - Make sure your compliance materials reflect the updated 2026 wage rate.
